The audience too were energetic and certainly seemed to love each minute of it, (I know just how energetic they were because I had two six foot lads either side of me and they ensured that my right shoulder has yet to fully recover - love `em).

'Dizzy' was one serious crowd pleaser due to the addition of Vic and Bob (Bless their cottons) on stage to give an as yet unreleased version of the song. Vic's voice was powerful and suitably croony and his charisma gave Mr. Hunt just a little run for his money. Bob (groovily clad in his favourite ever shirt: watch clips from Jon Ross and 'This Morning'- I rest my case) looked like he was thoroughly enjoying himself and leapt enthusiastically all over the place. Thankfully all on stage ignored the daft ritual of plastic beakers being hurled onto the stage and belted out the last verse with verve (if ever so slightly different lyrics) and the brief appearance by two salesman from Reeves and Mortimer products injected the audience with a heightened burst of enthusiasm. With this offering the band completed the first section of the set and went off stage.

We clapped and shouted a bit (and there's me waving my arms embarrassingly a la Duranie) to

bring the band on again and as we expected they did return to gob-smack us with a few more. Then they disappeared again; but now it was time for the encore....

All inhibitions lost, feet stomped, hands clapped and two thousand people positively hollered. Eventually the gentlemen returned with a blueberry-muffin-filling version of Radio Ass Kiss' and a stunning acoustic 'That's Entertainment' - I had no idea that these chaps were really so talented. Yet this gig still did lack that Christmassy lustre we were all after. We were waiting to slap our thighs to 'Golden Green' or at least wave our arms in naff unison to a potentially superb version of Slade's 'Here it is Merry Christmas'. Instead we got cardboard masks, streamers and silly string; now, as I mentioned earlier The Wonder Stuff don't really seem to go in for frilly bits (apart from that blue shirt, of course) and so this seemed to be just too underdone to be effective.

It does seem such a great shame that this gig finished on a tepid note. Martin's crowd dive was an absolute Godsend, or else it may have been thought - Heaven help me - that the band found us all a bit boring after a while; shame they didn't bring Vic and Bob back on really....
